Jones honored as Coach of the Year

University of Hawai'i football coach June Jones and UH athletes Nick Rolovich and Kim Willoughby were among those honored last night at the 55th annual Banquet of Championships at the Pacific Beach Hotel.

Jones, who led UH to a 9-3 record, was honored as the George Archer Coach of the Year.

Rolovich, who started the season as a backup quarterback and ended it as a record-setting starter, was named Male Sports Person of the Year.

Willoughby, a star on the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team and a current member of the basketball team, was named Female Sports Person of the Year.

Female Prep Athlete of the Year—Nicole Garbin, Baldwin High School, outstanding soccer and basketball player, state soccer player of the year.

Male Prep Athlete of the Year—Inoke Funaki, Kahuku quarterback and basketball player, and football co-offensive player of the year.

Adult Female Athlete of the Year—Kim Willoughby, UH volleyball, led nation in kills per game, named all-WAC, all-region and All-American, set numerous UH records.

Adult Male Athlete of the Year—Nick Rolovich, UH quarterback who led team to eight victories in UH's final nine games, including a 72-45 win over BYU.

Senior Female Athlete of the Year (Over 35)—Donna Kahakui, 37, ocean environmentalist and paddler, paddled at Statue of Liberty to bring attention to ocean environment.

Senior Male Athlete of the Year (over 35)—Lionel Low, 61, earned a gold and silver at National Masters Track and Field Championships in July. Also named outstanding male athlete of 2001 Aloha State Games.

Neal Shaw Blaisdell Award (Any professional or nonprofessional, male or female, athlete or other person in the field of sports, who throughout the years has devoted his or her exemplary efforts to bring great recognition to sports in Hawai'i.)—Keith Amemiya, HHSAA president.

Scotty Schuman Award (Any resident of Hawai'i who is a nonprofessional in the field in which he or she is honored — volunteer coach, sports organizer, fund-raiser, etc. — for outstanding contribution or participation during the year 2001 in sports in Hawai'i)—Larry Price, director and president of Hawai'i Sports Hall of Fame.

Joe Reynolds Award (Any member of the Honolulu Quarterback Club, who as a volunteer contributor of any kind, exemplified a high achievement standard for the club of sport enthusiasts in Hawai'i.)—Florence Au.

George Archer Coach of the Year (Any male or female athletic coach, professional or nonprofessional, who in 2001 developed a team or player to achieve outstanding results; previous winners are eligible.)—June Jones, UH football, finished with a 9-3 record in 2001.

Female Sports Person of the Year—Kim Willoughby.

Male Sports Person of the Year—Nick Rolovich.
