Girls basketball tips off

Advertiser Staff

Last year's state girls basketball finalists, champion 'Aiea and runner-up Kalaheo, will renew their rivalry tomorrow in the opening game of the second annual Punahou Wahine Spring Basketball Classic.

The preseason tournament will be played tomorrow through Saturday at Punahou's Hemmeter Fieldhouse.

Kalaheo and 'Aiea play at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow, followed by Punahou against Kalani at 7 p.m.

On Thursday, Kamehameha plays Moanalua at 5:30 and Punahou's Division II team plays McKinley at 7.

Semifinals are Friday at 7 and 8:30 and the championship game Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

'Aiea upset top-seeded Kalaheo, 52-45, on May 21 for the state championship. Just five days earlier, Kalaheo ripped 'Aiea, 67-51, for the O'ahu Interscholastic Association championship. This will be their first meeting since.

Between them, the teams graduated four all-state players, including three-time state Player of the Year Brandy Richardson of Kalaheo. She is at UC-Santa Barbara. 'Aiea's Aritta Lane is at Fresno State.

Punahou has finished no lower than third place in the past five state tournaments, and Kamehameha was the state champ in 1999 and 2000. Mike Taylor, a Punahou assistant for nine of the past 11 years, is the new Punahou head coach.

Baldwin clinches state berth: Brandon Ahonima scored 20 points, including a putback with six seconds remaining, as Baldwin beat King Kekaulike, 47-45, last night to clinch the Maui Interscholastic League's second berth in the boys state tournament.

Ahonima scored 12 of the Bears' 13 fourth-quarter points.
