Drivers still must challenge tickets

The state's traffic camera program has been suspended because of flawed citation forms, but drivers who contested the citations still must go through the motions to have them thrown out.

The suspension followed yesterday's dismissal by two state judges of more than 100 contested citations.

The judges ruled that the citations were invalid because they lacked a required statement about the certification of the program's laser operators.

However, Marsha Kitagawa, state judiciary spokeswoman, said this doesn't mean others contesting citations now can simply forget about them.

Anyone who had a citation must make the case, in court or in person, that the citation form is invalid. Otherwise, they will be found guilty by default and will be expected to pay the fine, Kitagawa said.

She added that state transportation officials had not yet submitted a revised citation form for judiciary review by this morning.
