Clinic for prep athletes, coaches on tap

The David S. Ishii Foundation is sponsoring a free clinic on the rules of golf for high school players and coaches Sunday.

Ishii, Greg Meyer, Beau Yokomoto and Chuck Larson will conduct the clinic at Pearl Country Club. It will run from 3 p.m. to sundown, with a 2:45 p.m. check-in.

• Leadbetter clinics: The Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association is bringing David Leadbetter Junior Golf Clinics to O'ahu, Maui, the Big Island and Kaua'i next month. The clinics will be March 24 (Ko'olau Golf Club), 26 (Waikoloa Kings'), 27 (Po'ipu Bay Resort) and 28 (Dunes at Maui Lani).

Gary Gilchrist, Director of the David Leadbetter Junior Golf Academy, will conduct the clinics with Gilda Hawie, a Leadbetter instructor for Mexico and South America.

Each clinic will have a maximum pupil-to-teacher ratio of 6-to-1 and include swing instruction with video analysis, short game techniques, exercises and drills. Players must register by March 10.

Gilchrist and Hawie will also conduct a "Train the Trainer" Workshop for instructors and members of the LPGA and PGA March 25 at Waialae Country Club. for more information, call the Aloha Section PGA (593-2232).

SHORT PUTTS: Kapalua Golf Club's staff has been named the Regional Ping Clubfitter of the Year for Hawai'i. Kapalua was one of 57 regional winners from nearly 2,000 entries submitted by Ping's U.S. sales staff. The award was presented recently at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Fla.
