Hawai'i student artworks go to national competition
Virginia Wageman,

The artistic achievements of Hawai'i's high-school students have been recognized in the annual National Scholastic Art Awards Program. This year, arts professionals selected 175 works from approximately 800 entries submitted from schools statewide. Of these, 75 will be sent on to New York for national judging for Gold Key awards.
Many of the award winners were displayed at Neiman Marcus, where the ceramics were particularly noteworthy. A raku vase with beautiful subtle tones of brown by St. Louis student Steve Young (teacher: Leroy Lehano) was fired in a metal trash can. Also particularly lovely is a hand-built ceramic vessel by Jiyeon Cha from Roosevelt (teacher: Beverly Hashimoto). Autumn Powell from Iolani (teacher: David Roberts) has several wonderful ceramic pieces, especially "Color Me Gone" and "Sky Teapot." The program is sponsored by the state Department of Education.
