Windward

Water service to be shut off

Water will be shut off from Malaekahana to Kahuku on the Windward O'ahu coast from late tonight to tomorrow morning as crews from the Ho-nolulu Board of Water Supply install a new valve at their Kahuku Reservoir.

The shutdown will last from around midnight to 6 a.m. tomorrow. The water board has notified residents and says a water tanker will be at Kahuku Hospital to supply any overnight water needs.

Honolulu

Fitness event holding finale

The final event of the Exercise Honolulu program will be held at 6:30 a.m. tomorrow at McCoy Pavilion in Ala Moana Beach Park and feature activities, food and entertainment.

The free activities will include a fun walk around Ala Moana Park at 7 a.m. and continuing every half-hour. Booths will offer free weight checks, body fat and blood pressure screening and a healthy food display.

The program is a collaborative effort by the city and state and was created to challenge the people of O'ahu to become healthier through good nutrition and exercise. Since the program began last month more then 200 people have participated in community walks at several community parks.

Preschools seek applicants

'Aha Punana Leo, which founded the Hawaiian Language Immersion Program, is accepting applications for fall enrollment for all preschool sites statewide.

There are 11 preschools in the state, operated in conjunction with the Department of Education; a 12th is expected to open next month.

'Aha Punana Leo is a private nonprofit corporation paid for by federal and charitable grants that focuses on Hawaiian language immersion preschools.

The schools are part of the public school system and there is no tuition. Students enter the program at age 3 and have the option of completing their K-12 education in Hawaiian language immersion.

Straub offers summer study

The Straub Foundation is accepting applications from college students interested in medical careers for its Summer Student Research Program.

Eight college students will be selected to participate in the intensive eight-week program, which allows them to work with physicians and patients and get real-life experience in clinical research and medicine.

This year's program runs from June 17 to Aug. 9. The deadline for applications is Thursday. For more information, call 524-6755.

East Honolulu

Teacher wins honor

Students in Suzanne Brauer's first-grade class at Wai'alae School celebrated the announcement recently that their teacher had won the Outstanding Educator Recognition contest sponsored by Duke's Waikiki and T.S. Restaurants.

Brauer, who has taught kindergarten, first and second grade for several years, helped originate Kupuna Day at the school, where grandparents are invited for lunch and to be entertained by the students and teachers, and an annual sleep-over at Sea Life Park for kindergartners and their parents.

Church holding fair tomorrow

Kilohana United Methodist Church in Niu Valley will sponsor a community fun fair 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow to raise money to build an elderly daycare facility on the church grounds.

At the fair, there will be a rummage sale, a silent auction, bake sale and plant sale. Children can get their hair painted and braided.

The Royal Hawaiian Band will hold a concert 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The church is at 5829 Mahimahi St.
