Palolo man guilty in beating death
A 48-year-old Palolo man accused of beating his landlord to death in June 2001 pleaded guilty in Circuit Court yesterday to manslaughter. Wesley K. Chong was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Edgar Lum, 64, who police said was struck in the head repeatedly by Chong with a can of food following an eviction dispute.
Because Chong is a repeat offender, he faces a term of life in prison with the possibility of parole when he is sentenced April 29 by Circuit Judge Karen Ahn. Chong would face the same sentence if he were to be convicted of second-degree murder.

Police yesterday charged a 22-year-old man in connection with the robbery of a 27-year-old Japanese tourist at Ali'i Beach Park on Feb. 12.

Camera tapes arson suspect
Police have released a sketch of a possible arson suspect who was videotaped yesterday entering the parking lot where a fire destroyed a van at the Ohana West Waikiki, 2330 Kuhio Ave.
Firefighters, who believe the blaze was maliciously set, responded to the 5:19 a.m. alarm in the basement parking lot. The fire sprinkler system also helped extinguish the blaze, which caused $22,000 in damage to a van and three other cars.
A surveillance camera captured the image of a man entering the parking lot. A witness later reported seeing the man before the fire alarm went off, police said.
According to the witness' description, the suspect is in his early 30s, 5 feet 8 to 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 140 pounds.

Police said the robbery happened at 1:50 a.m. when three men confronted a motorist who was parked at his girlfriend's house at the 46-000 block of Ha'iku Road.
The men drove up in a silver Honda station wagon and one of them, who was armed with a knife, opened the man's door and accused him of cutting off his brother on the H-3 Freeway.
The knife-wielding robber stole money from the man and slashed his tires. The other two intruders kicked and damaged the man's car. After the robbery, the men drove off, police said.
