UH rolls past Fresno State, 66-47

Advertiser Staff

Taking control two minutes into the basketball game, the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine blew by Fresno State, 66-47, last night at North Gym.

Hawai'i (18-6, 11-4 WAC) seized the lead for good when freshman Chelsea Wagner's 3-pointer made it 3-2. The advantage was 26-15 when April Atuaia came into a game for the first time since she tore her anterior cruciate ligament a month ago.

The Bulldogs woke yesterday to a story in the Fresno Bee saying Britt King could be coaching her final games. They went to bed 9-16 — 4-11 WAC — after shooting just 28 percent. UH set a season-low by holding them to 47 points.

"It was the most dominating game we've ever had in Fresno," UH coach Vince Goo said. "It was like they saw that story this morning and didn't care anymore."

Nine Rainbows played at least 12 minutes. UH was led by reserve Christa Brossman, who had a season-high 14 points. Kim Willoughby, also a reserve, grabbed 11 rebounds. Atuaia had a rebound and assist in five minutes.

'Aiea graduate Aritta Lane was the only Bulldog in double digits, collecting 16 points and 10 of FSU's 20 offensive rebounds. All-WAC point guard Lindsay Logan scored seven on 3-of-10 shooting.

UH remained a half-game behind second-place Rice, which upset No. 7 Louisiana Tech, 57-56, in Houston, ending Tech's 77-game conference winning streak.

OVER AND BACK: Hawai'i plays its final regular-season road game Sunday at Nevada, at noon. It will be broadcast live on 1420 AM.
