Witnesses sought in Wahiawa murder case

The victim in a beating in Wahiawa died Thursday night, and police homicide detectives are trying to find more witnesses who could shed light on the murder investigation.

Mark Mehr was found on a Wahiawa sidewalk.
Mark Mehr, 43, died at 6:40 p.m. Thursday at The Queen's Medical Center, where he had been brought in critical condition after 9 p.m. Feb. 11.

The Wahiawa father, construction worker and Army reservist was found lying on the sidewalk outside an apartment building at 329 California Ave., said homicide Lt. Bill Kato.

He had injuries that appeared consistent with a beating, Kato said, although detectives are still investigating their cause.

Homicide detectives have been working on the case since Feb. 13, when it appeared that Mehr would not survive, he said.

Kato said they've "heard some stories" about an argument that escalated into the beating that would pinpoint the assault to around 9 p.m. but they're sure there is more information out there.

"We want to hear from anyone who saw anything fronting 329 California Ave., between around 8:30 and 9:15, to call us," Kato said.

Mehr was a construction worker with four children, ages 23, 19, 15 and 13. The Army's 9th Regional Support Command office at Fort Shafter confirmed that Mehr was a command sergeant major; he served in the reserves from 1984 until the present; he also served in the Army for four years of active duty.

Witnesses or other people with information can call Detective Ted Coons at 529-3053 or Detective Larry Tamashiro at 529-3083.
