Airport package 'suspicious'

Airport fire investigators yesterday morning were checking into a "suspicious" package that had languished in its freight container at the U.S. Customs office since Thursday.

The Honolulu Fire Department was called at 7:52 a.m. to the customs facility near Gate 28 at the Honolulu International Airport.

The department's hazardous materials unit was called, but the package was turned over to state investigators based at the airport, said fire department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo.

Woman reports assault in Kalihi

A fight between a boyfriend and girlfriend reportedly escalated early yesterday into an assault and kidnapping case when the man allegedly punched the woman and dragged her back to the car when she tried to flee near Liliha street.

The couple was driving home from Kalihi about 1:30 a.m. and began to argue. The man, 38, punched his 37-year-old girlfriend in the nose and left arm, police said.

The woman reportedly got out of the car near Liliha Bakery and tried to flee, but the man ran after her and pulled her back into the car.

While they continued driving on the H-1 Freeway, police said, the woman convinced the man to take her to Wahiawa General Hospital for treatment. He dropped her off and left, police said. There have been no arrests.
