Three state swimming records fall in opening races

Advertiser Staff

Three of the most venerable records in the Local Motion State High School Swimming and Diving Championships were broken yesterday in trial heats at Kailua, Kona.

Two of the records that were erased were 19 years old and another was 16 years old.

In the first four swimming events, two meet records were broken by big margins. Two more fell later.

The Waiakea girls 200-yard medley relay team broke a 19-year old meet record in the first event.

The team of Jessica Bartolome (backstroke), Kathy Ka'apu-Lyons (breaststroke), Nicole Okuna (butterfly) and Tamara Binek (freestyle) were timed in 1 minute, 49.12 seconds, erasing the record of 1:49.51 set by Punahou in 1983.

Three events later, Iolani sophomore Mark Eckert Jr. improved his lifetime best in the 200 freestyle by nearly two seconds to break the record set last year by his teammate, Hongzhe Sun.

Eckert's time was 1:39.89. His previous best was 1:41.79 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championships two weeks ago and Sun's state meet record was 1:40.78.

"I was surprised myself," Eckert said.

Sun put his name back in the record book in another event, breaking a 16-year-old mark in the 100 butterfly. His time of 49.71 replaced the record of 50.85 by Matthew Cerizo of Maui in 1986.

"I'm really happy, but I think I can go faster" today in the finals, Sun said.

Later in the meet, Kaiser senior Ashley Swart swam the girls' 500 freestyle in 4:57.27 — 6/100ths of a second faster than the record of 4:57.33 set by Diane Williams in 1983.

Eckert swam "just to qualify" in the boys' 500, but still missed the meet record by only .25 of a second, and neither he nor Sun swam in yesterday's relay heats. In relays, the team qualifies and coaches can substitute individuals in the finals.

"I'll go for it tomorrow," Eckert said.

Eckert credited Iolani coach Brian Lee for his nearly two-second improvement.

"We trained hard and Brian got us tapering the last two weeks," he said. "It's all paying off in the end."

Eight qualifiers in each event of yesterday's trials will compete in finals today, starting at 1 p.m. Diving semifinals and finals will start at 8:30 a.m.

Nearly half of the 24 meet records are considered endangered.

Binek said she hoped the medley relay record was a good omen as Waiakea's eight-girl team, coached by Dan Lyons, tries to beat Punahou, which has won 41 of the previous 44 state championships.

Iolani's boys are going for their first state title since 1996. Punahou has won 39 of 44 boys crowns.
