Aztecs win individual, team titles in Burns

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i sophomore Matthew Kodama shot the day's low round, but San Diego State's John Lieber captured medalist honors and led his team to the championship of the John Burns Intercollegiate yesterday at Leilehua Golf Course in Wahiawa.

Kodama played the final round in 5-under-par 67 — a career-best — and finished in a tie for second with Cal's Scott Carlyle (69), at 209. Carlyle transferred from Hawai'i to Cal last fall.

Norman-Ganin Asao, the only Warrior senior, tied for 12th at 73-216. Asao was two under before a triple bogey. UH-Hilo's Nick Mason, who shot a 66 Thursday, also finished at 216. Punahou graduate Parker McLachlin, a UCLA senior, was 26th at 72-217.

Lieber, a senior who qualified for the PGA's Buick Open last year, shot 71 for a three-day total of 207.

The Aztecs, ranked 34th in the current Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, finished at 11-under 853 to beat 10th-ranked Auburn by nine shots.

Hawai'i finished 11th, at 882, while UH-Hilo was 14th (892).

After Kodama and Asao, UH had no one in the Top 60.

"Right now, I'm really scrambling to find a 3, 4 and 5 player who can give me a 74 or less," said UH-Manoa coach Ronn Miyashiro. "We can hang in there with that because we can rely on Matt and Norman to have a good score. We can't survive going seven over every round.

"We lost to BYU and Colorado State by one and UCLA by three. Three shots makes a big difference. This is going to be a big recruiting year for me."

• Wie in qualifier: Punahou seventh-grader Michelle Wie is in Monday's qualifying for the LPGA Takefuji Classic. As of yesterday, nine players were signed up to compete for two spots.

Takefuji, the LPGA's season-opening event, runs Thursday-Saturday at Waikoloa's Beach Course. The field includes 2002 LPGA Player of the Year Annika Sorenstam, defending champion Lorie Kane, Hall of Famers Juli Inkster and Betsy King, and former UH golfer Cindy Flom.

Sorenstam finished second at Takefuji the past two years.

Tournament organizers are still looking for volunteers to help in all areas. Call 886-8201 on the Big Island for information.

The tournament will be broadcast live on The Golf Channel each day from noon to 2:30 p.m. There will also be daily rebroadcasts from 6-8:30 p.m.
