Four-year run ends for Alama-Francis, Daniels

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

Throughout the season, Ikaika Alama-Francis and DC Daniels were able to carry Kalaheo to victory after victory.

If not for a 33-point performance by Iolani sophomore Derrick Low, the senior duo probably would have done it again last night in the state basketball final at the Blaisdell Arena.

But there was no repeat championship for Kalaheo as the Raiders won the Hawaiian Airlines Boys State Championship, 58-57.

Daniels and Alama-Francis combined to score 41 points and helped the Mustangs battle back from a 10-point first-half deficit to take a 47-45 lead with four minutes remaining in the game. It was Kalaheo's first lead since 10-9 with three minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Low gave the Raiders the lead for good at 50-49 with 2:06 left by hitting the first of two free throws.

"We played so hard throughout the season, and to end with a loss, I'm kind of bummed about that, but I'm proud of these guys," Alama-Francis said. "We worked hard all season, never gave up. I'm glad to be a part of the Kalaheo tradition."

Low, who made 12 of 16 shots, scored 22 of his points in the first half, including all 14 Raiders' points in the first quarter.

"In the first half he shot 8-for-10, and we just couldn't stop him," Kalaheo coach Pete Smith said. "We tried different people. We fought hard, we came back, we took the lead, but we couldn't make stops down on the other end."

The Raiders led 31-21 with 1:53 left in the first half, but Kalaheo went on a 16-5 run over an 8:25 span bridging the third and fourth quarters to take the lead.

"Iolani fought with us, we fought back, but they came out with the victory in the end," Daniels said.

Shortly after the final buzzer, Kalaheo assistant coach Chico Furtado, who missed the Mustangs' previous two tournament games with the flu, applauded his team's effort and hugged Alama-Francis. He and Daniels were both four-year varsity members.

"Four years we had that kid, and we watched him grow, watched him get better," Furtado said. "He's a good kid to coach, he never gives us any problems. He and DC, when you're with someone that long, it's almost like they're part of your family."

Alama-Francis scored 21 points on 8 of 13 shooting, while Daniels added 20 on 6 of 12 shooting.

In three state tournament games, Alama-Francis and Daniels scored 124 of the Mustangs' 174 points.

"That's what they're expected to do," Smith said. "They fought, they're leaders, they played with heart."
