HPU sweeps two from Cal State-L.A.

Hawai'i Pacific scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Cal State-Los Angeles, 8-6, in the second game of a college baseball doubleheader sweep yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.

HPU (13-9) won the first game, 5-4. Cal State-Los Angeles is 5-17.

The Sea Warriors won the second game despite being outhit 10-5 and committing five errors.

Ikaika DuPont and Nicholas Longpre each had two hits for the Sea Warriors. Kai Austin picked up the victory, allowing one run, striking out two and walking none in four-plus innings of relief.

In the first game, the Sea Warriors scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 4-all tie.

HPU's Wade Taguchi was 2-for-3, with two RBIs and two runs scored.

SOFTBALL

Hilo sweeps: Leinani Hashida's single drove in Michelle La Rose with the winning run as the Vulcans beat Chaminade, 4-3, in the first game of a doubleheader sweep yesterday at UH-Hilo Softball Field.

Tara Martinez pitched a two-hitter in the Vulcans' 7-0 victory in the second game.

Hilo is 11-2 overall, 2-0 in the Pacific West Conference. Chaminade is 5-7, 0-2.

In the first game, Chaminade's Melissa Marquez had a three-hitter and a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning when the Vulcans scored all their runs.

In the second game, Hilo third baseman Diana Kim was 5-for-7 in the doubleheader, raising her average to .429.

BYUH, HPU split: Hawai'i Pacific pounded 13 hits, including a bases-empty homer by Brandy Choy Foo, to defeat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 10-1, in the second game and earn a split of a doubleheader at BYUH field.

The game ended in the fifth-inning due to the league's eight-run rule.

In the first game, Lyza Halas hit a two-run double in the sixth inning in BYUH's 4-2 victory.

HPU is 7-5 overall, 1-1 in the PacWest. BYUH is 4-8 and 1-1.

In the second game, Tiari Keliinoi was 3-for-4 and scored three runs for the Sea Warriors.

Wahine beat alumnae: The University of Hawai'i beat its alumnae, 5-1, in an exhibition game at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium yesterday.

QUARTERBACK CLUB

Wallace, arena football: Riley Wallace, University of Hawai'i men's head basketball coach, will speak at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and the meeting at noon at the Pagoda Restaurant.

Also on the agenda is the Hawaiian Islanders arena football team. Speakers include head coach Guy Benjamin, defensive coordinator Al Noga, quarterback Darnell Arceneaux and owner and operator Kimberly Wang.
