Embracing chaos at World Cafe

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Editor

Ozomatli, a motley musical crew from urban America that is equally at home doing hip-hop or Latin rock, returns to Hawai'i for a performance March 19 at the World Cafe.

Ozomatli, a band that blends hip-hop and Latin sounds, tends to draw big crowds.
At its last concert, held at the old Pier Bar at Aloha Tower, the band drew an overflow crowd. Excitement is bound to be equally high this time.

The nine-member Los Angeles combo, with its multi-cultural musical posture and multi-ethnic membership, is named for the Aztec god of dance. The band is committed to social change and community-building, advocating its stance through a fierce and funky sound that is a Cuisinart mixture of salsa, hip-hop, rock and funk, tapping polyglot influences including Cuban, Japanese, Chicano and African elements.

Its sound echoes War, Santana, Los Lobos, Malo, Johnny Pacheco, Yomo Toro and more, with a harder edge. An Interscope Record act, Ozomatli last performed in the Islands in August 2000. Its latest CD is "Embrace the Chaos."

Also on the concert bill: the jazz- and underground-inflected Quadraphonix, and DJs Evil and Jedi.

Tickets, at $20, are on sale at the World Cafe and Ticket Plus outlets.
