SURFING

• Hawai'i surfers advance: Eight Hawai'i surfers advanced to the round of 32 in the Gotcha Pipeline surfing contest yesterday at the Banzai Pipeline.

The second and third rounds of the event were held yesterday in treacherous waves that ranged from 6 to 10 feet.

Defending champion Bruce Irons of Kaua'i won his third-round heat to lead the Hawai'i contingent.

Other Hawai'i surfers advancing were Ian Walsh, Jamie O'Brien, Brian Pacheco, Raymond Reichle, John Gomes, Jason Bogle and Tamayo Perry.

Richard Sills of South Africa and Bernardo Pigmeu both received perfect 10s for long barrel rides.

One more day of competition is required to determine a champion. Officials have until March 3 to complete the contest.

CORRECTION

• Not a first in swimming: Saturday was the third time, not the first, that Punahou won neither a boys nor a girls championship in the 45-year history of Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Swimming and Diving championships.

Iolani won both titles in 1996. In 1998, Hawai'i Preparatory Academy won the boys' title and Iolani took the girls' championship.
