Faith Nakano began working at Hono-lulu's Shriners Hospital for Children as a nurse in 1942.

"Retire" is not a word in Faith Nakano's vocabulary.

She has walked in the front door of Honolulu's Shriners Hospital for Children on more than 15,600 days and put in 124,800 hours. The hospital has declared today "Faith Nakano Day" in honor of her 60th anniversary of employment.

Nakano, who will turn 80 this year, said she's made it through her career following the advice of her father, who told her to do the best she can each day. She never had children of her own, but at the hospital, she found an extended family, beginning as a nurse in 1942.

"She's definitely been a mentor to many of our young physicians," said

Tom Brotherton, the hospital's administrator and CEO.

Nakano said she never got bored because she was able to move from department to department.

"I do not want to just stay home and look at the walls," she said. "I look forward to every morning."
