University of Nebraska pitcher Shane Komine of Honolulu was selected yesterday as Collegiate Baseball newspaper's National Player of the Week and the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Komine, a two-time All-American, was honored for his nearly perfect performance against McNeese State Friday in Louisiana. In his second start of the season, Komine allowed one hit and struck out 14 in eight innings, facing one batter more than the minimum.
The 5-foot-10, 175-pound right-hander struck out eight of the first 10 batters he faced and retired the last 15, using a total of 94 pitches, or 11.8 per inning.
It was his 19th double-figure strikeout performance and his highest single-game total since he struck out 16 against Missouri on April 14, 2000. He is Nebraska's career strikeout leader with 415 in 354° innings.
"I have seen Shane when he is very good, but he was outstanding (Friday)," Nebraska coach Dave Van Horn said. "He kept them off balance. He had great stuff and it's fun to watch as a coach."
Komine is a 1998 Kalani High graduate from Kaimuki.
This season, Komine is 1-0 with 20 strikeouts and a 1.29 ERA in 14 innings.
