Hiker in fatal fall identified

The medical examiner's office has identified the hiker who died in a fall from a Waimanalo hiking trail Sunday as Jheffrey Miller, 23, of 'Aiea. Fire officials said he fell from a mountaintop 600 feet above Kalaniana'ole Highway and landed in a gorge 200 feet below.


Motorcycle crash victim identified

The Schofield Barracks man killed in a Saturday motorcycle accident has been identified as Jose Melendez, 27.

Melendez died at St. Francis Medical Center-West, where he had been taken following the 11:55 p.m. crash at Campbell Industrial Park.

Police said he had been riding southbound on Hanu'a Street and crashed into a tree.


Two prison escapees captured in four days

Two prison escapees have been captured in the past four days.

Honolulu police said Michael Kauonoi Jayon was arrested Friday at a Waikiki hotel. He was on furlough from his sentence for burglary and assault when he escaped from the Laumaka Street work furlough center Jan. 28.

A 39-year-old inmate who escaped Sept. 23 was arrested Monday crossing 9th Avenue at about 4:45 p.m. She had escaped from the T.J. Mahoney halfway house when she was due to be transferred back to the O'ahu Community Correctional Center because she tested positive for alcohol use.


Man robs bank on Queen Street

A man robbed the American Savings Bank on Queen Street on Friday, getting away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The robber entered the branch at 9:18 p.m. and passed a note demanding money to the teller. After getting the money, he ran away.
