Moanalua pep squad judged best in OIA

Moanalua High School won the O'ahu Interscholastic Association pep squad championship Monday night at Stan Sheriff Center.

'Aiea was second and Mililani third. Judging scores were not reported by the league.

The three top schools along with Pearl City, Kaimuki, Kaiser, Radford, Kailua, Wai'anae and Campbell will represent the OIA in the first Local Motion Cheerleading State Championships at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Other schools in the state championship include Kamehameha, Punahou, Baldwin, Maui, Waimea, Waiakea, Kealakehe and Hilo.

In the OIA junior varsity championship, Radford placed first, followed by Kahuku and Moanalua.


HALL OF FAME

• UH-Hilo honors its best: The 10th Annual City Bank/Vulcan Hall of Fame and Distinguished Alumni ceremonies is Saturday at the University of Hawai'i-Hilo Campus Center Dining Room.

This year's inductees include the 1981 women's volleyball team, the late Chancellor Edwin H. Mookini, and former basketball player Ia Saipaia.

Tickets for the 4 p.m. event are $20 and include a dinner buffet and a ticket to the Vulcan basketball game against Hawai'i Pacific at 6 p.m. at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. A special alumni package is $35, and also includes a ticket to Friday's Hilo-HPU game and a pre-game reception.

BASEBALL

• Rain won't go away: The University of Hawai'i-Hilo's series with Brigham Young was canceled after yesterday's game was washed out by rain at Wong Stadium.

Monday's game was halted by rain with Brigham Young leading 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Vulcans are 3-22-1.
