Police said they believe alcohol was also a factor in the accident, caused when a speeding car, a gray Honda Civic, hurtled through a red light at the junction of Kahekili and Likelike highways at about 12:35 a.m.

All three occupants were men in their 20s, police said. The accident killed the front-seat passenger; he and the rear-seat passenger were ejected from the car.

The city medical examiner's office today had not confirmed the identity of the dead man, a 25-year-old Waimanalo resident.

The Civic struck a black Honda multi-purpose vehicle traveling in the town-bound lanes of Likelike. The driver, a 36-year-old woman, and the two survivors from the Civic were taken to The Queen's Medical Center. She was listed in fair condition this morning; a hospital spokeswoman said one of the men, 24, also was in fair condition, but the other, 31, was listed in guarded condition. Police investigators this morning were unable to say which survivor was the driver.

The Civic collided with a maroon van that was stopped at the light in the eastbound lanes of Kahekili. The occupants of that car, a couple with a toddler, were uninjured, police said.
