Hawai'i last in voter turnout

WASHINGTON — Hawai'i had the lowest voter turnout in the nation in the last general election and ranked at the bottom in voter registration, with about one of every two eligible voters registered, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report.

Voter turnout nationwide rose to 60 percent in 2000 from 58 percent in 1996, according to the report, which looked at voting and registration rates and characteristics during presidential elections.

Washington, D.C.; Maine; Minnesota; North Dakota; and Wisconsin had the highest turnout at 70 percent. Hawai'i had the lowest at 44.1 percent
