12 to watch in 2002
Michelle Wie

Advertiser Staff

She's now 12, has grown at least an inch to taller than 5 feet 10 and can drive the ball 270 yards. If she asks to play through your foursome, just wave her ahead.

At 10, Michelle Wie became the youngest to qualify in a USGA event. Last year, she advanced to the third round of the National Women's Public Links and became the youngest as well as the first female to qualify and play in the Manoa Cup, symbolic of the Hawaiian Amateur Golf Championship, which was first played in 1907.

Though Wie, a Punahou School seventh-grader, won't be able to play for her high school team for two more years, that won't stop her from looking for challenges on the golf course. This year, she hopes to qualify for more national tournaments, such as the USGA Women's Amateur and the USGA Girls Championship.
