Here's an island-by-island look at some of the major state road construction projects planned for 2002.
O'ahu
Nimitz Highway from Sumner Street to Queen Street. Rebuilding weakened pavement areas, new drainage and pedestrian facilities, adjusted utility lines, new street lights, water mains and bridge railings. $15.4 million.
Likelike Highway from Emmeline Place to Wilson Tunnel. Resurfacing and reconstruction of existing roadway and other improvements. $14 million.
Kamehameha Highway, Waiahole Valley Road to Crouching Lion Inn. Resurfacing, shoulder paving, retaining walls, pedestrian walkways and accessible route for bridges. $10 million.
Kamehameha Highway at Halawa Stream. Construction of a temporary bridge and detour road, demolition and replacement of the existing townbound bridge. $7.2 million.
Farrington Highway, from Nanakuli to Makaha. Safety improvements including left-turn lanes, roadway lighting, ADA retrofits, sidewalks and other alternatives. $7 million.
H-1 Freeway, Palailai Interchange. Reconstruction of highway surface, extension of shoulders, bridge decking improvements, drainage improvements and new signs. $5.7 million.
H-3 Freeway. Seismic retrofit of the Kailua Interchange and improvements at the Leeward end. $5.1 million.
Farrington Highway, Kamehameha Highway to Fort Weaver Road. Landscaping, irrigation, drainage, curbs, median islands and signage. $5 million.
Waiahole Bridge Replacement on Kamehameha Highway. A new 100-foot-long bridge with two 12-foot-wide traffic lanes and 11-foot-wide shoulders are planned. $5.1 million.
Kamehameha Highway at Kahekili Highway. Construct a roundabout at the intersection. $2.6 million.
Big Island
Hawai'i Belt Road at Kupapaulua Bridge. Widen bridge to provide two 12-foot lanes and 8-foot wide shoulder on each side. $15 million.
Mamalahoa Highway. Emergency replacement of the Pa'auau Stream bridge and other projects. $12 million.
Hawai'i Belt Road. Clean and paint steel members of the Pahe'ehe'e and Hakalau Bridges. $8.7 million.
Kea'au Pahoa Road. Widen and resurface existing pavement near Paradise Park. $6.4 million.
Hawai'i Belt Road, Kolekole Bridge. Retrofit existing bridge. $5 million.
Maui
Pu'unene Avenue/Mokuele. Widening 1.3 miles of existing highway from two to four lanes, adding shoulder and wide-grassed median, 10-foot-wide paved bikeway and pedestrian path. $15 million.
Hana Highway, Kaupakalua Bridge. Construction of new bridge and removal of old one. $9.8 million.
Honoapi'ilani Highway. Widening from Ma'alaea Road to north Kihei Road. $7.2 million.
Kuhio Highway, various locations. Resurfacing, new guardrails, repairs and other improvements. $7.3 million.
Kaua'i
Kaumuali'i Highway, 'Oma'o to Hanapepe, Maluhia Road to 'Oma'o Road and 'Oma'o Road to Kaloa Road. Resurfacing, construction of new shoulders, guardrails and other improvements. $4.7 million.
Kuhio Highway, Wailua Plantation. Remove existing bridge deck and guardrails, and install new precast concrete deck over bridge. $1.2 million.
Kuhio Highway, Princeville to Haena and Hardy Street to Kuene Street. Resurfacing, new shoulders and other improvements. $4.3 million.
Moloka'i
Kamehameha V Highway. Replacement of Kawaikapu Bridge and widening of roadway approaches. $3.5 million.
Kamehameha V Highway, Kamalo to Puko'o. Reconstruction of weakened pavement areas and resurfacing. $2.3 million.
Moloka'i Baseyard. Build one-story office building, maintenance, storage buildings, parking shed and other improvements. $3.5 million.
