Police seek public's help in holiday crash

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu police are hoping the public can provide more information about a serious accident New Year's Eve that left a woman in critical condition.

The 60-year-old woman was injured when the vehicle she was riding in overturned on the H-1 Freeway just east of the Punahou Street offramp, police said.

The driver of the eastbound 2000 Nissan MVP had attempted to move from the center lane to the right lane about 10:10 p.m. Monday. Police said the driver panicked after seeing a car in the right lane, oversteered through the middle lane and collided with a 2-door 1989 Toyota in the left lane.

That collision caused the Nissan to overturn. The Toyota then slammed into a concrete barrier on the right shoulder.

The victim was taken to The Queen's Medical Center and remained in critical condition this morning, a hospital spokesperson said.

Sgt. William Baldwin, an investigator with the police department's vehicular homicide section, said police are looking for information on a speeding vehicle in the area just prior to the accident. Witnesses are asked to call 529-3136 with information and a contact telephone number, he said.
