'Three Kings'

The "Three Kings Celebration," the traditional Latin American Christmas, will begin with Mass at noon Sunday at St. John the Baptist Church, 2324 Omilo Lane in Kalihi, and continues from 1:30 to 6 p.m. with a fiesta at the United Puerto Rican Association of Hawaii's Social Hall, 1249 N. School St. Among the attractions will be a Nativity skit, gifts for children from the Three Kings, lunch, music and dancing. Admission to the fiesta is $5, free for kids under 10. 847-2751, 234-0772.

At the piano

Jon Nakamatsu, gold medalist in the 10th Van Cliburn International Piano competition in 1997, performs with the Honolulu Symphony 4 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Ann Manson, music director of the Kansas City Symphony, will be the guest conductor. The program will include Beethoven's "Prometheus" Overture, Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2, Martinu's "The Frescos of Piero della Francesca," and Hindemith's "Mathis der Mahler." Nakamatsu, whose last Honolulu performance was in September 2000, has toured extensively in the United States and Europe. Tickets are $15-$55. 792-2000, 591-2211.

Listen up

If you weren't fast enough to score tickets to the sold-out Honolulu shows of "A Prairie Home Companion," you can turn on the radio and listen in. Garrison Keillor and crew will take the stage at the Hawai'i Theatre, warming up at 12:45 p.m. Saturday — for a 1 p.m. show to be broadcast at 6 p.m. on Hawai'i Public Radio stations (88.1 FM, 90.7 FM and 91.1 FM), but broadcast live in Mainland markets — and again at 7:30 p.m., warming up at 7:15 p.m. The broadcast will be repeated at 6 p.m. Sunday on 89.3 FM and 1380 AM. Island musicians Ledward Ka'apana and George Kahumoku Jr. will be guest artists. The "Prairie Home Companion" shows are a benefit for Hawai'i Public Radio. 955-8821.

All about art

Art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Visit the Honolulu Academy of Arts for free on Sunday and get an eyeful and more as the museum celebrates its 75th birthday. The offer, for visitors and residents on the first Sunday of each month through December 2002, is in addition to the museum's continuing free admission on the first Wednesday of each month. Sunday hours are 1-5 p.m. 532-8700.

At the beach

Another year, another set of Sunset on the Beach events, with food, entertainment and feature films shown on a 30-foot screen at Queen's Surf beach in Waikiki. It all begins at 4 p.m., with Lance Kalahiki and Miko Sweet, and Ike Pono performing Saturday; Ko'u Mana'o and Na Kama Sunday. Among the eateries and beverage purveyors offering their ware will be Joe's Hamburger Grill, Scotty Boy's BBQ, Seafood Village, The Hau Tree Lanai, Mr. Pizza, Skyline Café, Royal Hawaiian Hot Dog, Simply Ono Popcorn and the Beach House Cart. The featured films are "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" Saturday and "Titanic" Sunday, each screening at 6:15 p.m. Admission is free. 523-CITY (2489).
