WINDWARD

Schools chief talks tomorrow

Patricia Hamamoto, newly appointed superintendent of education, will discuss "The Felix Consent Decree — a Blessing in Disguise" at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 780 Keolu Drive, Kailua.

The lecture, open to the public, is sponsored by the American Association of University Women.

Hamamoto, previously the deputy superintendent of education, has been active in Hawai'i's education system since 1967. She also served as a teacher, department chairwoman, guidance counselor, vice principal, principal and personnel specialist.


Windward Mall subject of talk

Jonathan Kim, Windward Mall general manager, will discuss the mall's role in the community at a dinner meeting beginning at 6:15 p.m. Thursday at Flamingo Restaurant in Windward City Shopping Center, Kane'ohe.

Kim will highlight Windward Mall's interaction with businesses, entertainment, education, health and volunteerism, said Janis Lindley, board member of the Kiwanis Club of Kane'ohe, which is sponsoring the dinner.

The no-host dinner is open to the public.

Exercise plan begins at park

A program called Exercise Honolulu will hold its first event from 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m tomorrow at Ala Moana Beach Park's McCoy Pavilion.

Grant to help mentally ill

NAMI O'ahu, the local affiliate of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, has been given a total of $10,000 from the Rev. Abraham Akaka Ministries Foundation, the Pharmaceutical and Manufacturer's Association of American, Janssen Pharmaceutica, Boidyne-Magellan, Astra-Zeneca Pharmaceuticals LP and the Hawai'i Clinical Research Center.

The money from the grants will go toward NAMI O'ahu's free public programs of education, support and advocacy for the mentally ill.


St. Andrew's concert Sunday

An evening of classical music will be presented starting at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Andrew's Cathedral, Beretania and Queen Emma streets.

A St. Andrew's Choir performance of Titcomb and Mendelssohn works will be followed by an organ recital by cathedral musician Arlan Sunnarborg performing "In dulci jubilo" by Bach, "Noels" by Daquin and "Wie schoen leuchtet" by Buxtehude.

Calabash offerings are accepted and a reception will follow the concerts.
