Kalaheo sizzles in OIA opener

KANE'OHE — When you're hot, you're hot.

Kalaheo's DC Daniels cut off Castle's Michael Proctor during the Mustangs' 77-45 win over the Knights last night.

And the Kalaheo High School basketball team was sizzling last night in its O'ahu Interscholastic Association East Division opener, burning the nets and torching Windward rival Castle, 77-45.

The defending state champion Mustangs made five 3-point shots in the first period to take a 23-10 lead and made 7 of 8 from beyond the arc in the first half while jumping out to a 43-17 lead. Kalaheo made 14 of 24 field goals (58 percent) in the first two periods, and finished the game with 10 3-pointers.

On one shot in the second half, the Mustangs' Ikaika Alama-Francis had his 3-point attempt skip straight up off the side of the backboard and fall right through the net. On another, Kalaheo's Michael Gayle swished a 20-footer despite being nearly cross-blocked by a Castle player.

"There's nothing much you can do," Knights coach Rocky Fraticelli said. "Look at that first (3-point) shot: DC Daniels has a hand right in his face and he just buries it."

Daniels, Alama-Francis, Gayle and Charles Elliot each sank two 3-pointers, and William Elliot and Shaine Harada each added one. Alama-Francis scored a game-high 21 points and Daniels, coming off an ankle injury that sidelined him for the final two preseason games, added 10 points for the Mustangs.

Ryen Isip led Castle with 19 points and Po'okela Craig-Rodenhurst added 10 for the Knights.

Both teams' head coaches said the game could have been a tale of two preseasons. Kalaheo went 12-2 in the preseason against some of the state's top teams and a couple of Mainland powers. Castle went 10-1, but against different competition.

"We played our first three games at home, and then the rest of them were on the road," Kalaheo coach Pete Smith said. "We try to schedule it like that so that if we play on the road (in the regular season), we're ready. It helps when we come into a place like this."

Fraticelli said the difference in preseason schedules was revealed last night.

"It's all part of experience, and they played tougher teams than we did," Fraticelli said. "But it's good to (be challenged) in the first game. Tonight we were going to find out what kind of team we really have, and it was evident that we're not playing at the same caliber as them right now."
