Services for former UH, NFL player Aiu

Charles Aiu III, a University of Hawai'i offensive lineman in the 1970s who went on to play in the NFL for the San Diego Chargers and Seattle Seahawks, died Dec. 28.

He was 47.

Aiu, of Kailua, played for UH from 1972-75, the final two years under Larry Price, now a radio personality for KSSK.

Price remembered the 6-foot-2, 240-pound Aiu as a "real quiet, humble guy. He was every coach's dream offensive lineman, disciplined, hard worker, strong."

Memorial services will be held at the Kamehameha School Chapel Sunday, visitation at 1:30 p.m., with services to begin at 2:30 p.m. Attire is aloha.

Aiu was a public defender investigator for the state and security officer at the Sheraton Waikiki. He graduated from Damien Memorial School.

Aiu is survived by his wife, Noelani Cashman-Aiu; daughter Cashman Kinohi Aiu; father, Charles K. Aiu Jr; mother, Mildred W. Aiu; sisters Janella, Charlene, Camille and Marilyn Aiu.


BASEBALL

• More preseason honors for Komine: Nebraska pitcher Shane Komine was named to the Baseball America preseason All-America second team, the bi-weekly newspaper announced on its Web site yesterday.

Komine, a 1998 Kalani High graduate, also has received preseason All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball newspaper and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.


FOOTBALL

• Niumatalolo on Navy staff: Ken Niumatalolo, former University of Hawai'i quarterback, has joined the Navy coaching staff as an assistant head coach and offensive line coach, and will coach the centers and guards.

Niumatalolo was an assistant at Navy from 1995-98, serving as the offensive coordinator in his final year there. He comes to the Navy from UNLV, where he coached for three seasons.


BASKETBALL

• Chaminade wins: Igor Beljanski scored 22 points to lead Chaminade to an 81-75 victory over Montana State-Billings last night in a PacWest game.

Mike Donegan added 18 for the Silverswords (8-4). The Yellowjackets fell to 8-2.

The two meet again tomorrow at 7:30 p.m., at McCabe Gym.
