Police are searching for the driver in a hit-and-run accident that killed a man yesterday morning in Waimanalo.

Police investigated the scene of a pedestrian fatality on Kalaniana'ole Highway at Humuniki Street in Waimanalo.

The victim was tentatively identified as a 79-year-old man who lived a few houses from the accident site, police said.

The man apparently was out for a daily walk when he was struck about 7:12 a.m. near a crosswalk on Kalaniana'ole Highway where it intersects with Humuniki Street.

Police are on the lookout for a black, double-wheeled flatbed truck.

A witness following the truck saw it take evasive action and turn onto a side street, police said. The truck then did a U-turn and fled toward Hawai'i Kai on Kalaniana'ole Highway. The truck contained a wooden storage box and a pipe rack with plumbing material on the rack, police said. The truck also had a sign on it.

The truck was probably not damaged, because no breakage or automobile parts were found at the scene, police said.

Morning traffic was diverted around the scene for several hours.

The passing cars woke up Rose Heavey, whose home is close to the accident scene. There were so many people on the street that she went to investigate, still dressed in her pajamas.

"People do a lot of speeding around here. There are very inconsiderate people out here," said Heavey, who has lived on Humuniki Street since the 1970s.

Anyone with information about the truck is asked to call the police Traffic Division at 529-3499.
