Two questioned in Kalihi gunfire

Detectives on Thursday questioned and released two Kalihi Valley brothers who are suspected of firing at least four gunshots at neighboring homes on New Year's Eve.

The brothers — one 33, the other 40 — are being investigated on possible reckless endangerment charges.

Police said the brothers are suspected of firing bullets between 6:30 p.m. Monday and 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Bullets were fired into a home on Violet Street and another on Nihi Street. There were no injuries.

Suspect sought in attempted robbery

CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department need the public's help in finding a man who tried to rob Longs Drug Store Thursday in the Kamehameha Shopping Center, 1620 N. School St.

The suspect entered the store and approached a cashier at 12:25 p.m., demanding money.

When the cashier, a 27-year-old woman, told him she needed a key to open the register, the suspect pointed a gun at her and again demanded money. She repeated that she needed a key.

The suspect fled in a blue van and was last seen on Makuahine Street. He is described as a muscular, Polynesian male in his late 20s or early 30s, 5-feet-8 to 6 feet tall and 160 to 180 pounds.

He was wearing a gray beanie, a gray sweatshirt with the words "Polo Jeans" on the chest and baggy blue jeans with a yellow floral print rag hanging out of one pocket.

Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 529-3383 or CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.

Kunia brushfire burns five acres

A brushfire near the Hawai'i Country Club in Kunia scorched about five acres yesterday afternoon but did not damage any property.

The fire was reported at 2:23 p.m. on the Wai'anae side of Kunia Road just above the golf course, said fire department spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada. Nine fire units and the fire helicopter responded to the blaze, which was extinguished shortly after 4:30 p.m.

Tejada said the fire was slowed by green grass in the area.

"If it had been dry grass it would have been a little more challenging because the wind would have taken the fire a lot further," he said. "There's a good breeze going even down here in the valley."

No one was hurt in the fire on Kealaluina Drive in Halawa Heights.
