Former UH standout Morse dies

Tony Morse, a member of the University of Hawai'i Circle of Honor, died Saturday at The Queen's Medical Center. He was 86.

Morse was a three-sport athlete at UH, excelling in football as a blocking back and linebacker; in basketball as a guard and in track and field as a discus thrower.

He was a leader of the UH defense that shut down California for a 14-0 victory in the Pineapple Bowl on Jan. 1, 1934. The Rainbows were unbeaten in six games that season.

Morse was inducted into the Circle of Honor, the University of Hawai'i's athletics hall of fame, in 1987.

Morse was a graduate of McKinley High School.

Morse is survived by his wife, Bea, of Honolulu; sons Michael and Stephen; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Nu'uanu Mortuary. Burial will be private.

VULCANS DEFEAT NEW MEXICO

Scott Prather scored 16 and Derek Mgbeke added 13 as the Vulcans defeated the Mustangs, 92-56, in their PacWest opener Friday night at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Hilo improved to 11-2 and extended its winning streak to nine, and Western New Mexico fell to 1-6.

MEETING

QB Club: Chad Owens, the freshman All-American kick returner for the University of Hawai'i football team, high school basketball coaches Pete Smith of Kalaheo and Dr. Mark Mugiishi of Iolani, and HPU basketball coach and athletic director Tony Sellitto will be guest speakers at the Honolulu Quarterback Club on Monday.

Lunch will be served at the Pagoda International Ballroom at 11:30 a.m., followed by the program at noon.
