Kalaheo takes over lead in OIA East girls soccer

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

KAILUA — The gusts swept fiercely through Windward O'ahu yesterday afternoon, bringing steady drizzles that blew sideways toward Mokapu Peninsula.

Kalaheo's Rina Elloso goes up to control the ball against Roosevelt's Tobi Kanehira in the first half.

Eugene Tanner • The Honolulu Advertiser

Not good soccer weather.

But Kalaheo High School's girls had a blast anyway, blanking previously unbeaten Roosevelt, 4-0. The victory gives the Mustangs (6-1-1) sole possession of first place in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division with 19 championship points.

Castle (6-2) is in second place with 18 points, and Roosevelt (5-1-1) drops to third place with 16 points.

Kalaheo has two matches remaining, against Moanalua (3-4-1) and McKinley (0-6-1).

"I told the girls that if we win out, we should take (the East title)," Mustangs coach Alan Heu said. "That's why today's win is even bigger."

The game was closer than the score might indicate, as Kalaheo led only 1-0 until the 57th minute, when Lindsey Peck scored from about 20 yards out from the left side of the penalty box.

Michelle Benson had given the Mustangs the 1-0 lead on a short goal in the 25th minute.

Roosevelt had a chance to close to 2-1 in the 62nd minute, when Kalaheo was called for a hand ball in the penalty box. But Mustangs goalkeeper Amy Lusk made a diving save on the ensuing penalty kick, and Breton Frazier made it 3-0 on a 30-yard free kick three minutes later.

Rachel Cordery ended the scoring with a short goal from the left flank in the 67th minute.

Heu said it could have been a different game if not for Lusk smothering the penalty kick.

"That was a big save," Heu said. "But she's done it before. She kept us in the playoffs last year against Kahuku when we shut them out into two overtimes before losing in a shootout."
