NORTH SHORE

High surf warning issued

The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued a high surf warning last night for northwest facing shores of the Hawaiian Islands.

The surf was expected to continue to build last night and into today, with faces of waves reaching heights of 25 to 30 feet on O'ahu and Kaua'i, with lesser surf on the other islands. The high surf is the result of storms creating swells north of the island chain.

Beachgoers are urged to stay out the water and well away from the shore break to avoid dangerous surf and rip currents.

Volunteers plant greenery

Members of the Rotary Club of Kapolei last month participated in a community beautification project with the Hawaiian Railway Society at the railway museum in 'Ewa.

Together, the volunteers planted approximately 50 trees and bushes that had been purchased for the event using a community service grant from Rotary International. Bougainvillea plus several native species were selected for planting based primarily on their ability to survive in the dry climate.
