Punahou, Kamehameha play to 1-1 tie in boys soccer

The Kamehameha and Punahou boys soccer teams played to a 1-1 tie yesterday at muddy Kapi'olani Park, leaving some fans on each side wondering whether they should be happy or sad.
For Kamehameha, should the Warriors (4-1-1) be glad they were able to tie it in the 80th (final) minute on a short goal by Kekoa Smith? Or should they be kicking themselves for coming up empty on six previous shots on goal in the second half?
And what about Punahou? The Buffanblu (4-0-1) might feel fortunate to have gone up 1-0 on Satoshi Mitsuda's unassisted goal in the 57th minute despite being out-shot 7-3 after halftime, or they could be angry about letting victory slip away with about 55 seconds remaining.
Both coaches seemed satisfied in the end, which left Punahou atop the Interscholastic League of Honolulu standings with 14 championship points and Kamehameha in a tie for second place with Iolani (both with 13 points).
"I was a little frustrated, because I thought we could have won," Kamehameha coach Andrew Ah New said. "But it's hard not to be happy with the tie, because our guys kept playing hard."
Punahou coach Bob Clague felt pretty much the same way.
"We had some good opportunities too," Clague said, "but a tie is probably the fair result."
The soggy field, spotted by several large patches of tall grass, made it difficult for either team to win. Goalkeepers Andrew Strand (Punahou) and Zach McAngus (Kamehameha) played in front of big puddles under both nets, and the midfield was a quagmire.
Punahou had two scoring chances in the first 10 minutes one shot hitting the post and another with an open goal and Kamehameha had three solid shots later in the half.
But the action really picked up in the second half, when the Warriors started to put together crisp plays near the Punahou goal. Strand made a diving save on one shot and had two other saves in the half.
Kamehameha kept pressing, but the Buffanblu were able to clear one ball to midfield and worked it to Mitsuda down the left side. Mitsuda then got past a defender and angled in a shot from about 20 yards out.
"Their two forwards are very fast," Ah New said. "That goal was a big emotional blow for us."
All of a sudden, the pressure was on the Warriors, and they struggled to get their offense clicking again. Mitsuda nearly scored another short goal minutes later but McAngus deflected the ball over the crossbar.
With about one minute remaining, Kamehameha made one last push and finally scored. Smith and James Ogata closed on a loose ball near the top of the penalty box, and Ogata tapped it forward to Smith, who found the left corner of the net from about 18 yards out.
The late goal notwithstanding, Clague said his defense played well.
"We just were having a hard time getting it out of the mud area," he said. "Kamehameha's players were able to stay on their feet, which we were not able to do. That's what amazes me."
