Mirikitani failed to file state tax returns

Associated Press

The legal troubles of convicted former Honolulu City Councilman Andy Mirikitani may not be over.

The state Tax Department said Mirikitani hasn't filed Hawaii income tax returns for 1998, 1999 and 2000.

Mirikitani told interim bankruptcy trustee Paul Sakuda no harm was done because the state owed him refunds.

The department was one of half a dozen creditors appearing yesterday at a U.S. Bankruptcy Court proceeding for Mirikitani.

Mirikitani retired from the council in early December, just days before he was sentenced to four years and three months in prison in connection with a kickback scheme. He is to report to prison Jan. 17.

In his bankruptcy filing, Mirikitani said he has debts of more than $1.3 million.

He has asked for a public defender to appeal his conviction.
