Arena football to hold tryout

Former Utah quarterback Darnell Arceneaux and ex-Hawai'i linebacker Robert Kemfort are among 50 players who have been invited to the Hawaiian Islanders arenafootball2 league team's first tryout Saturday at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Players will be tested in the 20-yard dash, vertical leaps and other football skills from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Arceneaux is a former all-state player at St. Louis School, while Kemfort was a standout running back for Maui High.

The Islanders will kick off the 16-game season against the Fresno Frenzy, March 30 at the Blaisdell Arena at 7 p.m.

Other dates of note (subject to change): Kicker tryout (Jan. 16, 7 p.m.-8, Blaisdell Arena); open tryout (9 a.m.-1 p.m., Central Oahu Regional Park); Pacific Rim training camp (Feb. 4-8, time and site TBA); Invitational tryout (Feb. 16, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., site TBA); opening of training camp (March 11, time and site TBA).

BOXING

• State championships: The USA-Boxing Hawaii State Regional Championships will be held Jan. 17-19 at Team Tiger gym in Pearl City.

Semifinals will be held Jan. 18 and finals Jan. 19. Bouts start at 7 p.m.

General admission is $10, senior citizens $5 and children under 7 free.

Defending champions scheduled to compete include Dat Nguyen of Wailuku, Maui and Peter Costa of East O'ahu Boxing Club.

Winners advance to nationals.
