SWIMMING

• Silver anniversary: The 25th anniversary Kalani Invitational could be one of the best.

Nine meet records could fall, including some that have stood a decade or more, meet director Fred Tester said yesterday.

There are 29 teams, including seven from Neighbor Islands, and more than 450 swimmers entered, Tester said.

Qualifying heats will begin after opening ceremonies at 3 p.m. today at the Kalani High pool. Finals and consolation finals will begin at 2 p.m. tomorrow. Admission is free.

Diving will be held at Kaiser High pool at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

Among records threatened are the girls 100-yard butterfly mark of 58.57 seconds set by Kathy Allen of Roosevelt in 1992. Chelsei Nagata of Maui comes into the meet with a best of 59 seconds.

Records set in the 1980s by George Steuer of Leilehua and Scott Coleman of 'Aiea may be broken also.

Steuer's record of 1:42.46 in the 200 freestyle may fall to Noa Sakamoto of Punahou, who has done it 1/100th of a second faster. Coleman's 47.26 for 'Aiea in the 50 freestyle will be attacked by Iolani's nationally ranked Hong Zhe Sun, who has done 47.32.
