MS sufferers can borrow equipment

Advertiser Staff

Three new "loan closets" for people with multiple sclerosis have been set up on the Neighbor Islands, allowing patients short-term use of medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and canes.

The new closets are in Lihu'e, Kaua'i; Kahului, Maui; and Hilo on the Big Island. There also is an equipment loan closet on O'ahu.

A physician's prescription is required for the loan.

The loan program is made possible this year by a nearly $16,000 grant from the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation Inc.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic and often disabling disease of the central nervous system. The symptoms, which include mild numbness or paralysis, can come and go without warning, making it difficult for people with MS to plan for the future.

For more information, call the Hawai'i Division of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society at 532-0811. Neighbor Islands can call toll- free at (800) FIGHT-MS.
