Cherie Andrade was promoted to director of admissions at Hawai'i Pacific University. Previously she held the title of associate director. In her new capacity, she will continue to oversee the day-to-day operations of the office as well as assume the responsibility for the overall admissions and recruitment efforts.

Malia Park, assistant director of admissions, was promoted to associate director. She will oversee Hawai'i recruitment efforts. A Kamehameha Schools graduate, she is an active member of the Hawaii Association for College Admission Counseling.

HPU welcomed three new members to its admissions and recruitment team. They are Indiana native Daniel Branch, new assistant director of admissions, interactive media; Scott Kiedtke, assistant director of admissions, who will assist with Hawai'i recruitment efforts; and Guilherme Albieri, who was named international admissions coordinator for Latin America.

• The Girl Scout Council of Hawaii honored Cha Thompson and Myrtle Lee at its 2001 Woman of Distinction Dinner. Thompson is the executive vice president of Tihati Productions and Lee the former president of Island Holidays Tours and Amfac Resorts Hawaii. They were selected because of their decades-long careers as high-level executives in Hawai'i's travel industry, and because they are outstanding role models for Island girls.

• Keoki's Paradise Restaurant has recognized a number of employees for going above and beyond their normal work duties and for remembering to work with aloha. They are: Joe Palmer, lunch server; Wilmar Balaan, busboy, and Beny Cadiz, kitchen preparation person.

Rose Nakamura has received the sixth Aloha United Way's Alexis de Tocqueville Society of Honolulu Award. The award recognizes community volunteerism in the areas of health, youth, elderly and human services.

Easter Seals Early Intervention Program on Kaua'i has announced that a grant from the Hawai'i Hotel Association Kauai Visitor Industry Charity Walk will purchase therapeutic equipment for infants and toddlers with special needs.

Mental Health Kokua has received $5,000 for technical support relating to the successful merger between Mental Help Hawaii and Maui Kokua Services; $2,500 from the Hawaii Hotel Association Visitor Industry Charity Walk, to extend respite and peer coach training opportunities; and $20,000 from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation for achievement in management in recognition of Mental Health Kokua's service to the people of Hawai'i.

• The Ala Moana Hotel has donated $12,000 to the Waikiki Community Center. The money is proceeds from the hotel's 13th annual Torch Ginger Cup Invitational Golf Tournament, held at the Waikele Golf Club.

The Moanalua Gardens Foundation has received $10,000 in grants for two of its programs. The G.N. Wilcox Trust granted the foundation $5,000 for the Forest Treasures workshop on Kaua'i, and the Hawaiian Electric Industries Charitable Foundation donated $5,000 for its Moanalua Gardens Foundation Partners in Education Program.
