Wide receiver Jeremiah Cockheran of Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., has accepted a conditional football scholarship from the University of Hawai'i.
Cockheran needs to earn an associate degree to be eligible to play for the Warriors in the fall. Chaffey coach Carl Beach said Cockheran has a chance to earn the degree in May.
"He has to graduate to play," Beach said.
Cockheran verbally committed to play for UH in 1999, but did not meet the NCAA eligibility requirements to play as a freshman.
He enrolled part-time at Chaffey as a "gray shirt" and did not play during the 1999 season. But he played the next two seasons. Last year, he caught 52 passes in 10 regular-season games and was named to the Foothill Conference's all-star team.
Cockheran is a childhood friend of UH receiver Justin Colbert.
Beach said the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Cockheran has been timed at sprinting 40 yards in 4.28 seconds. He was a champion California high school sprinter.
"He's one of the fastest we've ever had," Beach said.
Cockheran received an offer from Utah, but indicated early that he wanted to attend UH.
