No. 4 Punahou edges Kamehameha, 38-35

 •  Boys basketball standings

The rims at Hemmeter Field House weren't all that friendly to the Punahou School boys basketball team last night, but the Buffanblu managed to pull out a sweet home victory over Kamehameha anyway.

Punahou, ranked No. 4 in The Advertiser Top 10 poll, won 38-35 to improve to 4-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Kamehameha, ranked No. 8, fell to 3-2 after its three-game win streak was snapped.

"It wasn't pretty," Punahou coach Greg Tacon said, "but we survived."

The Buffanblu prevailed despite making only two field goals and scoring four points in the first period. Luckily for them, Kamehameha only scored seven.

Both teams warmed up a little in the second period, but the Warriors maintained their lead, 16-13, going into the locker room.

"I wasn't displeased with the first half, especially with our defense," Tacon said. "But their zone (defense) was a little different from the first time we played them, so we had to find different shots. We took a game plan into the second half and executed it."

As in the first half, neither team led by more than four in the final 16 minutes. The Buffanblu's shooting heated up in the third period and they took a 26-23 lead on John Zabriske's short bank shot with 45 seconds remaining. But Kamehameha's Aaron Kahaloa sank a jumper with 25 seconds left to close it to 26-25 going into the final quarter.

Alex Fergus made a steal and layup to put Punahou up 34-30 with 4:42 remaining, but the Warriors answered with a 5-0 run punctuated by Willie Melemai's three-point play with 3:40 left.

Dane Uperesa made a layup on a 360-degree move to give the Buffanblu a 36-35 lead with 1:45 remaining, and Kynan Pang sank two free throws with 23 seconds left to put them up 38-35.

Kamehameha saw a 3-point attempt glance off the basket with three seconds remaining on its final possession.
