Hilo baseball drops doubleheader

Aaron Parker and Brett Wedding combined on a three-hitter as Sonoma State beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 4-3, to sweep a season-opening doubleheader yesterday at Wong Stadium.

Parker gave up two hits, three unearned runs and struck out eight over the first five inning.

Wedding struck out one over the final two innings.

Sonoma State won the opening game, 5-3.

Both games were seven innings.


KARATE

• Nationals coming here: The 2002 USA-National Karate Federation Junior Olympics and Masters Karate Championships will be held at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall in late October.

About 3,500 participants and their families are expected to attend the event.

The event is sanctioned by the USA National Karate-do Federation (USA-NKF), which is the governing body for the sport of karate in the United States.

The USA-NKF is responsible for development and fielding of all junior and senior karate athletes to officially represent the U.S. in international events.
