Leilehua on a roll in OIA softball tournament

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

The only question remaining after the Leilehua High School softball team's stunning 5-0 victory over Kaimuki yesterday was, "How the heck did the Mules lose three times (in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association)?"

Leilehua (8-3) answered all other questions — about its hitting, pitching and defense — by upsetting the Bulldogs (9-2) in an OIA Tournament quarterfinal game at Kaimuki. The Mules, seeded No. 3 in the Western Division, travel to West champion Mililani (11-0) at 3:30 p.m. today for a semifinal game.

Kaimuki will play host to Moanalua (7-4) in an elimination game today, with the winner playing for fifth place and the OIA's final state tournament berth tomorrow at Kapolei High School.

Leilehua clinched a state berth with yesterday's victory, banging out 11 hits and putting runners on in every inning except the last. The Mules scored single runs in the second and third, and three runs in the fifth.

In addition to the hits, they advanced runners with sacrifice bunts and stolen bases, applying constant pressure on the Bulldogs' defense.

"We try to be versatile," Leilehua coach MaryAnn Christian said. "When we've played good pitchers, we've had good hitting games."

The Mules scored in the second inning after Alexis San Nicolas led off with a single, advanced to second on Ericka Ige's sacrifice bunt, moved to third on an error and scored on Jessica Battease's groundout.

They got another run in the third after consecutive singles by Pikake Nutter-Gaudet, Heidi Garcia and San Nicolas.

Leilehua put the game away in the fifth after a single by Maile Christian, a double by Nutter-Gaudet, an error and a double by San Nicolas.

In addition to batting 3-for-4, San Nicolas pitched a two-hitter and did not allow a runner past second base. She retired the final 11 batters in order.

"Today was the best we've played all together," said Maile Christian, MaryAnn's daughter. "We beat them in the preseason, so we knew we could win. They got better during the season, but our attitude has changed. We're not playing for ourselves anymore. Everybody is for the whole team."

The team concept was put to the test a couple weeks ago, when coach Christian made seven players switch defensive positions. The Mules have since beaten three playoff teams — Wai'anae, Kalani and now Kaimuki.

Their three losses this season came against Mililani, Campbell and Waipahu.

"Our errors have come down from five or six a game to one or zero," said Christian, whose team played errorless ball yesterday. "I told the girls if we are going to win a championship, we have to be a team."

Kaimuki coach Lene Tausaga says Leilehua has a legitimate shot at its goal.

"Everything was working for them today — their hitting, their short game, their pitching, even their defense," Tausaga said. "From the time they beat us in preseason, I knew they were going to be real good. Now, I would put them head-to-head with Mililani."
