Fiery flamenco

Noche Flamenca, the acclaimed flamenco dance company, makes it O'ahu debut in a concert at 8 p.m. Saturday at Leeward Community College Theatre. The dance troupe was founded in Madrid in 1993 by artistic director Martin Santangelo and his wife, Soledad Barrio. Tickets are $25 general, $20 for seniors, students and military; $5 more for seats in a newly added reserved seating area. 455-0385. Also, Barrio will conduct a master class at 7 p.m. today at the theater. The fee is $18. Reservations: 455-0386.

The troupe launched its Hawai'i tour last night on Maui. A concert at 7 p.m. Sunday at Kahilu Theatre on the Big Island is sold out.

All jazzed up with a Grammy nominee

Karrin Allyson, Concord Records jazz singer, is performing at 4 and 7 p.m. Sunday at the Honolulu Academy of Arts theater. It's an opportune time because her latest CD, "Karrin Allyson: Ballads Remembering John Coltrane" is vying for two Grammy awards, including Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Engineered Non-Classical Album.

"I'm thrilled, of course," said Allyson, who has enlisted two popular local jazz instrumentalists to support her in concert, Bruce Hamada on bass and Jim Howard on piano, to join her regular guitarist, Danny Embrey.

Hamada also will tour Japan with Allyson for three weeks in May. She said Hawai'i is becoming a regular stop for her since she performed here a year ago.

The island cultures

A coconut husking/fire-making demonstration will be part of the fourth annual Polynesian Festival at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center's Fountain Courtyard 4-8 p.m. Saturday. Other demonstrations — from Fiji, Tahiti, New Zealand, Samoa, the Marquesas, Tonga and Hawai'i — include poi-pounding, coconut frond weaving, wood carving and Maori tattooing. The schedule:

  • 4 p.m.: Polynesian Cultural Center
  • 5 p.m.: Fijian cultural performance
  • 6 p.m.: Torch lighting ceremony
  • 6:15 p.m.: Coconut husking/fire-making demonstration
  • 7 p.m.: Polynesian show by Tahiti Toa

There's a scavenger hunt, too, in which Polynesian items will be hidden in the shopping center.

Where to park? The shopping center is offering a dollar-an-hour fee (up to five hours) in its parking garage; validate the tickets at the Visitor Center at the Fountain Courtyard.

Bells are ringing

Planning, planning and more planning. That's what it takes to pull off the wedding of your dreams. The 12th annual Hawaii Bridal Expo, with more than 200 wedding professionals on hand to offer their services, takes place this weekend at the Blaisdell Center. Young guitarists in concert

Young performers from 7th Fret Guitar Studios (director Darin Au is at right) will offer a concert Saturday to benefit Honolulu Theatre for Youth. The concert will include works ranging from Vivaldi to traditional Spanish guitar pieces to classical arrangements of rock favorites and even original rock tunes. Also, HTY artistic director Mark Lutwak and Au will perform accordion and guitar duets. The music begins at 7 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu, 1730 Punahou St. Tickets are $7 at the door. 988-7074.

A holiday to reflect: He had a dream

The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade begins at 9 a.m. Monday at Ala Moana Park, traveling on Ala Moana Boulevard to Kalakaua Avenue and to Monsarrat Avenue, ending at the Kapi'olani Park bandstand, where a "Celebrating Unity" rally will take place. Monday is a city, state and federal holiday honoring the slain civil rights leader whose galvanizing "I Have a Dream" speech is a key moment in U.S. history. Other events celebrating his memory:

  • A reception for an art exhibit titled "Living Harmony ..." begins 6:30 p.m. today at Honolulu Hale. The exhibit continues 7:45 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays through Feb. 15.
  • 'Olelo channel 52 will air an original program, "The Queen and Dr. King," at 8 p.m. today.The program, which features Nalani Olds, the Royal Hawaiian Band and a cast of hundreds, reflects on the lives and efforts of Queen Lili'uokalani and Martin Luther King Jr.
  • A candle-lit bell-ringing ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Nagasaki Peace Bell on the Honolulu Hale grounds.

On Maui: A march begins at 10 a.m. Monday (assemble at 9:15 a.m.) at Maui Community College, traveling down Ka'ahumanu Avenue to Maui Mall.
