Tonight's Must-See

"Roots — Celebrating 25 Years: The Saga of an American Classic," 7 p.m., NBC. Amid all of its silliness, television has had moments of splendor. One came one in 1977 when "Roots" sprawled across the ABC schedule.

The miniseries traced the family of author Alex Haley all the way back to Kunta Kinte, who was captured by slave hunters in Africa. Suddenly slavery had a face, thanks to dozens of actors led by LeVar Burton, who was plucked from obscurity while still a student at the University of Southern California.

The miniseries drew raves and nine Emmy awards while affecting attitudes toward history, genealogy and one another. In the TV world it launched a rich decade for miniseries. Its powerhouse ratings also proved that there were no limits to audience's interests.

Sadly, some people still underestimate the interest. ABC (which originally aired "Roots") rejected this special, reportedly arguing that it would have little appeal. Actually, it's richly involving. It interweaves great clips, plus the reflections of "Roots" stars — Burton, Maya Angelou, Ben Vereen, Ed Asner, Leslie Uggams and others.

Of Note

"Dark Angel," 7 p.m., FOX. Ever have one of those moments when you were forced to assassinate your former lover, but then it turns out that she might be alive anyway? That happens to Alec tonight.

"Now with Bill Moyers" premiere, 9 p.m., PBS. Two of the great forces of journalism — Moyers and National Public Radio — pair for this weekly newsmagazine.

"20-20," 9 p.m., ABC. Another journalism force returns. Barbara Walters' newsmagazine goes back to the timeslot where it once thrived.
