Student dies in fall from hotel balcony

A 23-year-old man fell to his death early yesterday from the 37th floor while climbing between balconies at the Pacific Beach Hotel.

Grace McCullough, a hotel spokeswoman, said the man was a resident of Slovenia.

Police said the man was staying on the 30th floor.

Police homicide Lt. Bill Kato said the man reportedly was nude and climbing between lanai railings. He also fell into a plate-glass window at one point before he fell from the building. Police said they didn't know if the man was intoxicated.

Ma'ili man arrested in assault on officer

A Ma'ili man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of assaulting a police officer.

Police say the man refused to stop when he was waved over on an alleged traffic violation.

The man finally stopped outside his home on Manuoioi Place, where he got out and confronted the officer, who was still inside his car, police said.

Police said the suspect attacked the officer through the open car window — punching, biting and gouging — until other officers restrained him.

He was arrested for investigation of unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, a felony, and third-degree assault.

Correction: A 23-year-old man who fell to his death while climbing between upper-story balconies at the Pacific Beach Hotel was not a Hawai‘i Pacific University student. Because of a source error, a version of this story posted on Jan. 19 had incorrect information.
