JUDD: Selected as preseason player of year

The University of Hawai'i softball team is the coaches' choice to win the Western Athletic Conference title, the league announced yesterday.

Kate Judd, the Rainbow Wahine's shortstop, was selected as the preseason player of the year after driving in 31 runs and scoring 32 last season.

Hawai'i's selection as the team to beat in the WAC ended a run by Fresno State, which had been tapped No. 1 in the preseason the past seven years.

The Rainbow Wahine had 34 points to Fresno State's 33. UH had four first-place votes and two second-place votes, while the Bulldogs had three first-place and three second-place votes.

The preseason All-WAC team includes three UH players in addition to Judd. Stacey Porter (first base), Natalie Gonzales (second base) and Stacie Hirano (outfield) were all selected to the preseason team.
