HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS
Mililani runs past 'Aiea for West lead

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

MILILANI — Unlike the Mainland, there is no shot clock in Hawai'i high school basketball. But Mililani's boys do not need one.

The Trojans turned last night's O'ahu Interscholastic Association showdown with 'Aiea into a track meet and won, 79-62, before a vocal home crowd of about 900. Mililani now leads the OIA Western Division with a 6-0 record, while Na Ali'i is 5-1.

All-star guard Rashaun Broadus scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Trojans, who got 31 points off the bench, including 18 from Simeon Tavares and 11 from Brandyn Fidel.

"It helps us a lot to have a real deep bench," said Broadus, who already has signed a letter of intent to play for Western Washington next year. "Simeon and Brandyn can both knock it down. Other teams can't zone in on me, because everybody on our team is real strong and can score."

The bench support came in handy, since the game was played at breakneck speed from the opening tip until the end. 'Aiea jumped out to a 15-10 lead in the first five minutes, but Mililani went on an 8-0 run to lead 18-15 going into the second period.

Tavares, a 6-foot junior, then came off the bench to score six points to help the Trojans take a 40-30 advantage into halftime. Fidel, a 5-9 junior, also scored six points in the first half.

"It's good to have bench help, and those guys are not shy about putting it up," Mililani coach Mike Coito said. "They give us a different dimension, and also play good defense. Simeon has good court vision, and helped us with some offensive rebounds. He has a good attitude — he doesn't mind coming off the bench. And Brandyn has done a good job for us all year. He kept us going, especially when (point guard) Gary (Deliz) went out."

Na Ali'i never got closer than nine points in the second half.

Wes Williams' layup closed it to 61-50 with 4:20 remaining in the game, but Fidel's two free throws with 1:47 left effectively sealed it by giving the Trojans a 71-57 lead.

Williams led Na Ali'i with 19 points, and Chris Antonio added 16 points. But it wasn't enough against the Trojans, who had nine players enter the scoring column.

"I think they had a good shooting night, and they controlled the boards," 'Aiea coach Rodney Cavaco said. "We're not going to beat too many teams when that happens."

Na Ali'i defeated Mililani in the preseason, but Broadus said the situation last night was different. The Trojans were coming off another big victory Tuesday, over once-beaten Radford.

"This week was basically to see who takes over the West," Broadus said. "It's a big relief."

Coito agreed, but added the season is far from over.

"We play Pearl City on Wednesday, and they're very scrappy," Coito said. "They're dangerous. I'm relieved to get past (Radford and 'Aiea), but it doesn't get much easier. There are no cupcakes out there."

OIA SOCCER

• Playoffs to begin: The first 200 games were warm-ups.

Next week, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association soccer season gets serious.

Twelve boys and 12 girls teams, out of the 42 that started divisional play last month, will duel in the league's championship tournament. At stake, besides the OIA championships, are five berths in each gender in next month's state tournaments.

The OIA boys tournament begins Wednesday and the girls start Friday. While various sites are used for early rounds, both championship games will be at Pearl City High on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Teams are seeded, and sites in the first two rounds determined, by the final divisional standings, so those first 200 games weren't without rewards. The first two seeded teams in East and West divisions get free passes into the quarterfinals.

Mililani won both the boys and girls championships in the Western Division. Neither team lost a game, although the girls were tied once.

Campbell's boys and 'Aiea's girls finished second.

In the Eastern Division, Kalaheo's girls and Kaiser's boys were the champions with Kailua's girls and Castle's boys finishing second.

Pearl City won both OIA boys and girls championships last year. But Pearl City's boys did not qualify for this season's tournament because the Chargers had to forfeit their first seven games when it was discovered a player had forged his grades in order to remain eligible.

Mililani is the defending state boys champion.
