WINDWARD

Marines held in robberies

Two Marines were charged yesterday in connection with three armed robberies and are suspected in up to a dozen similar robberies committed over the past month.

William Linwood IV and Antwain Salters were being held on $100,000 each, police said. They are assigned to Marine Corps Base Hawai'i, Kane'ohe Bay.

They were arrested Friday, shortly after several other robberies had been committed.

Honolulu detectives worked late yesterday to carry out a search warrant on a vehicle that belonged to one of the men.

Linwood and Salters are charged in connection with three robberies committed in the early morning hours on Friday, including a video store robbery, the robbery of a 7-Eleven on Farrington Highway and the armed robbery of a customer in the 7-Eleven.

The men are suspected in a number of robberies in which the robbers wore masks, brandished pistols, behaved aggressively and intimidated victims. Linwood and Salters are being investigated in connection with those robberies as well.

The string of armed robberies began about Dec. 20. No one was seriously injured.

Cancer society seeking angels

Windward volunteers are being sought to help patients through the American Cancer Society Angels on Wheels program, which offers cancer patients transportation to and from medical appointments.

The service is scheduled between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, to all major hospitals and physicians buildings.

Drivers are trained by the cancer society, use their own car, donate their time and gas, and must have appropriate car insurance.

"Angels, volunteer drivers, are desperately needed," said Beau Barker, with the Windward Unit of the American Cancer Society.

The 14 candidates will be given two minutes each to speak before the Ala Moana/Kaka'ako Neighborhood Board meeting at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Makiki Christian Church, 829 Pensacola St.

Another forum dedicated to the election is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Noelani Elementary School. Each candidate will give an opening statement followed by questions from the public.

A special election will be held Jan. 26 to determine who will represent the Manoa, Makiki and Ala Moana areas.

Former city councilman Andy Mirikitani stepped down last month after he was sentenced for theft, bribery and related charges in connection with a kickback scheme.
